MediVet's New Stem Cell Procedure Kit
MediVet's New Stem Cell Procedure Kit

We recently brought you a story about a new stem cell therapy that was used to help a police dog. In less than one month’s time this new procedure has already made new technological advances!

In our previous story, you might remember the police dog was having difficulty walking because he had been stricken with Lyme disease. In addition to treating the Lyme disease the veterinarian also had to do surgery on the dog because the muscle in his hind leg had started to deteriorate.

At the time, the veterinarian had to send out some fat cells from the dog to a lab in another state, then wait for the lab to extract the stem cells and send them back to the vet’s office. The stem cells were then injected into the dog’s leg muscle to improve the healing process.

The same company that has been doing the stem cell separation procedures – MediVet – has developed a special kit that enables veterinarians to separate the stem cells right in their own office. This week, two animals in South America will be the first beneficiaries of this new technology. In Penalolen Santiago, Chile an 11 year old German Shepherd will be treated for hip displaysia. The next day in Santiago a horse with severe tendonitis will receive the procedure.

MediVet’s new Adipose Stem Cell Procedure Kit allows the treatment to be completed in the same day, instead of the animal having surgery then waiting for several days before returning to the vet to finish the procedure. The new method also increases the number of stem cells that will be returned, up to four times greater than the amount when the sample is mailed to MediVet.

The kit also enables procedures to be done in rural areas where sending a medical sample properly and getting it back promptly is not an option. In remote areas around the world, this new therapy will allow more animals to be helped.

If your horse has been coming up sore your vet will likely recommend some horse joint supplements to help manage the symptoms of arthritis and degenerative joint disease. The horse joint supplement recommended by veterinarians most is Cortavet for Horses. This supplement contains Chondroitin and Glucosamine which work together to heal and maintain the cartilage in your horse’s joints. Cortavet for Horses is highly concentrated and will bring your horse relief, ideally preventing the need for surgery.
