Could my dog have Anorexia?

What is anorexia? Contrary to what is popularly known as anorexia nervosa in human beings, anorexia in dogs simply mean that they are no longer eating. Yes, this is probably a situation far worse that having a poor appetite because in this case the dog does not take in any form of food whatsoever. Anorexia nervosa, which is linked to some psychological roots in humans, should not be confused with this one because it does not occur in dogs. Nevertheless, anorexia can be a result of some behavioural factors that contribute to the dog’s prolonged fasting.

Ordinarily, the dog can still survive for 24 to 36 hours of not eating, but if ever anorexia already lapsed for more than 2 days then it is best to bring your pet to the vet immediately for possible intravenous fluids to supply him with nutrition whenever oral replacements still could not suffice. If he won’t eat anything then perhaps this is the best way to continue his nourishment for the time being. Prolonged fasting for more than two days can cease the normal body processes of the dog. If there’s no food intake way pass that time then it can even lead to hypoglycemic shock due to the absence of glucose that your dog usually uses to convert to energy.
In addition, anorexia can lead to many unwanted scenarios. First you can see some obvious thinning or muscle wasting of the dog’s body. Secondly, if you take the weight of your pet, you’ll notice a sudden drop from his normal baseline body weight. Next, your dog will appear weak, flaccid and in some cases not moving at all. Because of the lack of energy supply, your dog can no longer perform even the most basic of body movements, and this includes walking.

Anorexia in dogs can be a result of a lot of factors. It can be because of some environmental change, let’s say a new dwelling spot or dog house that he does not like. It can also be a result of the addition of a new pet at home that he sees as a major competitor to grabbing your attention. In some cases however, it can also be due to some illnesses. In this regard, it is best to note for any manifestations or symptoms evident in your dog that occurs at the same time as the moment of being anorexic. All of these details can really prove helpful most especially when you are going to seek an advice from your vet.

Therefore, if you noticed your dog not eating for more than 24 hours then suspect immediately for anorexia. It is best to get the proper intervention from the vet rather than just do some diet managements by yourself most especially if you are not that sure of what you’re going to do. Clearly, this problem needs to be addressed the soonest. If you wait for a much longer time then your dog may not just end up becoming thin but even dead.
