Adaptil Collar with DAP

CEVA Animal Health have added to their range of innovative pheromone products by launching the new Adaptil Collar with DAP, to compliment the use of the well established diffuser and spray formulations, used inside the home or veterinary practice.

Proven to help comfort both puppies and adult dogs in challenging situations outside, the Adaptil Collar with DAP is recommended;
To help a puppy settle into a new environment away from his mother and siblings
To help a rescue dog adjust to a new home and family
To help dogs remain calm during a stay in kennels
To ensure a puppy's first experiences of new activities are positive, especially during the socialisation period
To help dogs cope with novel and unpredictable situation away from the home
To help dogs exhibiting fear related reactions outside the home when encountering traffic, other dogs, thunderstorms, gunshots etc.

The Adaptil Collar with DAP works by releasing a constant stream of synthetic dog appeasing pheromone for a period of about 4 weeks. The dog appeasing pheromone is a substance produced naturally by a lactating bitch to reassure and calm her puppies, as they explore and learn about the world around them.

Importantly this pheromone is also proven to have a positive relaxing and comforting influence on adult dogs, increasing their confidence in the outside world and make the process of accepting new or difficult stimuli more relaxed and less challenging.

Combining the Adaptil Collar with the Adaptil DAP Diffuser may provide optimum results for dogs showing indoor and outdoor fears and for puppies or adult dogs settling into a new home. In multi-dog households, it is recommended that all the dogs wear an Adaptil Collar or that a Adaptil DAP Diffuser used. The Adaptil DAP Collar should be left on the dog at all times.

FAQ's

What activates the Adaptil Collar?
Close contact with the dog's skin, as well as the body temperature, allows the release of the pheromone.

How tight should the Adaptil Collar be attached to the dog?
The collar should be in close contact with the skin, like a flea collar, but with at least one finger fitting between the collar and dog.

Does the Adaptil Collar need to be stretched before it is placed on the dog?
No specific handling is required before placing the DAP Collar.

How should the Adaptil Collar be worn with other collars and bandanas?
The Adaptil Collar should be worn along side the regular collar or chain, so it is in contact with the skin. The Adaptil Collar can be worn with a flea and tick collar. Do not cover the Adaptil Collar with another collar or bandana. Do not use a Citronella collar with the Adaptil Collar as that scent interferes with the perception of pheromones. Do not use an anti-bark collar with the Adaptil Collar as anti-bark collars deliver a punitive message that is not recommended for behavior modification.

How quickly will the dog respond once the Adaptil Collar is placed on a dog's neck?
When the collar is placed, the perception of the Dog Appeasing Pheromone by the dog is immediate. However, as in every behavior program, the visible improvement in specific behaviors requires some time, depending on a variety of factors: the dog, the nature, duration and severity of the problem, and behavior modification (dog and owner). Usually, an improvement in specific behavior signs is seen during the first two weeks after wearing the Collar, but some dogs require a month to exhibit visible improvement.

How long will a Adaptil Collar be effective?
The Adaptil Collar is expected to release the pheromone for 30 days. The Collar will stop diffusing pheromone suddenly and clients usually notice a behavior change in their dog by the next day.

How can the dog owner evaluate success with the Adaptil Collar?
It is recommended to have the veterinarian regularly evaluate progress regarding the dog's behavior issues and decide when to stop using the Collar.

Will other dogs in the house be affected by a Adaptil Collar worn on one dog?
No, the pheromone is diffused in the immediate vicinity of the dog wearing the Adaptil Collar.

Will a person, cat or other animal be affected by a Adaptil Collar worn on a dog?
No, the Dog Appeasing Pheromone is species specific and has no effect on any other species besides dogs.

Can the Adaptil Collar be hung in a car or the house or left in a kennel?
No, close contact with the dog, as well as body temperature, is required to activate the collar.

Can the Adaptil Collar be cut to fit?
Yes, cutting the collar does not reduce efficacy.

What happens if a dog eats or chews on a Adaptil Collar?
The collar is made of plastics, so there could be a foreign body reaction. There are no toxic substances in the collar.

What are the warnings for people handling the Adaptil Collar?
The collar is not a toy so it should be kept out of reach of children. Contact with the collar while on the dog should not be a problem.

Can the Adaptil Collar get wet?
If the collar gets wet, it should be taken off and wiped dry in order to maintain continual release of pheromone. It can then be replaced on the dog with no loss of efficacy.

Can the dog be bathed or swim while wearing the Adaptil Collar?
It is not recommended to bathe a dog or let the dog swim while wearing the collar.

Will the Adaptil Collar stain white-coated dogs?
The collar will not stain the coat of white dogs under dry or wet conditions.

What happens if the Adaptil Collar is exposed to heat in the environment?
There will be some evaporation of the pheromone if it is taken out of the package and warmed, so the duration of activity may be shortened.

What is the dating on the Adaptil Collar?
The collar has a shelf life of three years, if it is stored in its original packaging in a dry place.

How is the Dog Appeasing Pheromone added to the Adaptil Collar?
The pheromone is added to the inert ingredients used in the manufacturing of the Collar in a liquid form, then heated and dried to give the Collar its final shape. This process is similar to collars that are infused with other ingredients.

DAp Collar versus plugin & spray A dog owners tried & tested recommendations
Petal | 09/05/2012 |

ADaptil, Feliway or DAP collar - used for our rescue dogs. It was good but the plugin and spray were better. The reason being that the collar needs to be worn next to the dog's skin so that the pheromone can be absorbed. The downside of this being that one cannot attach a lead to a DAP collar, so in order to attach the dog to a lead for exercise or to keep the dog secure, another collar with attachments for leads ect needs to be put on the dog's neck. The two collars then chafe together which the dog finds irritating, he/she then frantically scratches trying to remove it injuring it's skin. Therefore more stress is creted not less! Of course the dog can be fitted with a harness or a halter if it can tolerate wearing it, not all can. A better option we found was the plug in DAP which although odourless to humans is very effective for the dog and calms them quite quickly even through the inevitable noise created by others in the neighbourhood or event from fireworks on celebration events such as new years eve, The dogs stayed calm with the DAP plugin near their beds and totally ignored the noise sleeping right through it!. Your rescue dog may have never been transported in a vehicle before and even when crated or fitted into a car harness, the dog may howl at the very least and in our experience vomiting and going to the toilet also spraying and everything in the car including ourselves got covered in faeces from the frightened dog!- So for peace of mind and without needing to valet the car afterwards for the neccessary journey to the vet for a health check and or vaccinations we discovered the DAP SPRAY is invaluable!. Simply lightly spray the product -with the windows and vents shut- on the upholstery (or on a cloth hung from a hanger/handle if the interior is leather) before you plan to place the dog in the vehicle. Result: a very calm dog and a hassle free journey for both owner and pet and a clean vehicle!. We highly Recommend 100% ADAPTIL/DAP for its excellent calming and pleasing effects on all four of our dogs. We now have 4 well adjusted happy dogs.
