I regularly buy prescription medication from my Vet.
Veterinary medicines are classified into several categories, much the same as human medicines. We no longer supply veterinary medicines.
Why do some medicines require a prescription?
Some medicines are classified as POM (prescription only medicine) in order to safeguard your animals’ health and public health. These products may cause harm if used incorrectly. You may exercise your right to buy these medicines elsewhere if you have a prescription.
What is a prescription for a veterinary medicine?
A prescription for a veterinary medicine is the same as a prescription for a human medicine. It includes information such as the product name, dosage as well as the patient's and prescriber's details.
Which medicines require a prescription?
Only some of the medicines require a prescription. Many, such as Synoquin, Cosequin, most dog, cat and horse wormers and Hills diets do not and may be purchased instantly.
How do I get a prescription for my animal's medication?
A veterinary prescription needs the following details:
· Name & Address of Vet
· Professional Qualifications
· Date Details of the Animal/s to be treated
· Name and Address of the Owner
· Details of the medication, including drug, dose and quantity
· How many times the prescription may be repeated (if any)
· The Phrase "For animal use only, for an animal under my care" or similar
· Signature of your Vet (in ink)
Please note, medications can only be dispensed with a prescription from a registered U.K. veterinarian.

Payment for Prescription Medicines

Do I need a prescription for every order?
You can ask your vet to write a repeat prescription, which allows you to buy up to 6 months' worth of medicines. This could be 1 month worth of medicines repeated 6 times, 3 months repeated twice etc. Please ensure that the repeat section on the prescription form is signed by the vet, failure to do so will result in the prescription only being fulfilled for one months dosage. After this Tettenhall Wood Pharmacy will keep your prescription on file so that repeat orders can be made up to the total specified by the prescription.
One prescription can also list as many medicines as your animal requires.
Do I need a prescription for ‘Prescription Foods'?
No, however you should seek your vet's advice before feeding one of these diets.
Can my vet refuse to issue a prescription?
Your vet cannot refuse to issue a written prescription for a medicine they would otherwise be happy to dispense themselves. A recent government report has recommended that vets write prescriptions as a matter of course for treating animals. It is also in the vets’ professional code of conduct that they should not reasonably refuse to issue one at the request of a client.
Can my vet insist on check-ups or blood tests prior to writing a written prescription?
Legally, an animal that a vet writes a prescription for must be ‘under his/her care'. It is thus essential that your vet has established that the medication is both safe and appropriate for your animal. For common, long-term conditions such as arthritis, this often means a 6 monthly check-up. Your vet should not insist on more frequent check-ups/blood tests than they would normally insist upon had they been supplying the medicine(s) themselves.
Can I request a prescription from my vet for a particular drug?
Your vet will determine which prescription products are required and safe for your animal's condition.
