Bleeding Disorders in Cats
Bleeding disorders are diseases in which the blood does not clot normally.
Breathing - Difficulty
Problems with the upper airways with cause a noise when breathing. The commonest cause of this in a cat is Cat Flu.
Burns
An additional problem with cats is that there may be no visible indication of damage when the injury first occurs unless the fur is burnt.
Collapse
If you find a young cat collapsed, or unable to move, one of the first things to consider is that it has been hit by a car.
Constipation
A badly constipated cat will become depressed, of their food and may vomit.
Coughing
Cats may cough occasionally, this is likely to be due to hair irritating the back of the throat when grooming.
Depression - Dullness
If your cat feels unwell for almost any reason, it may become dull or depressed.
Fits
A fit is a fairly dramatic event, but is usually more distressing for the owner than for the cat.
Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is sometimes seen in cats. This may be due to a weakening of the sphincter muscle of the bladder.
Hair Loss
In some cases cats themselves have caused the hair loss by excessive licking or grooming and scratching, for instance due to severe itch.
Head Shaking
The cat will normally have lost its balance and co-ordination and may sway or hold the head tilted.
Jaundice - cats
Jaundice means a yellow discoloration of the mucous membranes, which are found on the inside of the mouth, lips and the eyelids, and of the skin (only visible in severe cases) and the white of the eye.
Labour Difficulties
Cats are normally pregnant for approximately 63 days. The actual birth usually takes place without any major problems but sometimes queens can have difficulty giving birth.
Lameness
One of the main reasons for lameness is fractures or broken bones. This is usually quite obvious, especially if it concerns an open fracture, this is when the bone protrudes through the skin.
Licking - Repeated
All cats lick themselves a lot. This normal grooming behaviour should not be confused with excessive licking for other reasons.
Lumps
Cats can have many different types of lumps with different causes. Therefore it is important to know what type of lump we are dealing with, so that it can de dealt with in the correct way.
Mange Mites
Mange is not very common in cats. However, rare cases of mange, have been found sometimes after contact with wild animals such as foxes, or after contact with affected other cats or dogs.
