Swollen abdomen in cats
An abdomen may appear swollen if a cat is overweight, but compare it to the rest of its body.
Abscess - cats
Most abscesses in cats are caused by bite wounds from other cats.
Accident - Road traffic
It is a fact of life that motor vehicles are responsible for the deaths of more young cats than any other single cause.
Anaemia
In cats, the commonest cause of anaemia is the Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV).
Appetite - Decreased
Although many cats will readily eat a large meal at one sitting, their natural feeding pattern is to take 7-10 small meals (each about the size of a small rodent) throughout the day.
Bad Breath
Bad smelling breath (also known as Halitosis) is not normal in cats and is usually an indication of a problem.
Biting
All cats will bite at their own fur on a regular basis as a part of their grooming behaviour, but it can also be a sign of irritation of the skin.
Bleeding
Any bleeding from a cat is abnormal. Female cats do not normally show any bleeding with their breeding cycles.
Breathing - Difficulty
Problems with the upper airways with cause a noise when breathing. The commonest cause of this in a cat is Cat Flu.
Burns
An additional problem with cats is that there may be no visible indication of damage when the injury first occurs unless the fur is burnt.
Collapse
If you find a young cat collapsed, or unable to move, one of the first things to consider is that it has been hit by a car.
Constipation
A badly constipated cat will become depressed, of their food and may vomit.
